PSA: I stopped pressing signatures flat and a 92 year old book in Tulsa taught me why
I used to clamp every signature flat in the press before sewing because that's how I was taught back in 2019, and I figured tighter meant better. Last Tuesday a woman brought in her grandmother's 1931 hymnal from Tulsa, and the spine was still flexible after 90 plus years because the sections had that slight rounded swell. When I opened my own flat pressed practice books from two years ago, the sewing threads had started tearing right at the fold from all the tension. So now I leave a little shoulder on each section and only press after rounding and backing. Anyone else fight the urge to clamp everything flat, or was that just me being stubborn?
tighter meant better" is the trap in like half of life honestly. You see it with guitar strings, garden soil, even packing a car, more force feels safer but it just wears stuff out faster. That hymnal is proof that a little give is the whole point.
