Took me 5 tries over 3 months to figure out why my book club kept picking the same kind of book
Our club in Portland kept arguing about the same 4 picks every single month, so I finally made a rule that whoever hosts has to bring one book from a genre nobody in the group reads. It took 5 tries across 3 months because every time I suggested something outside our usual stuff, two members would say it wasn't "club material" and we'd fall right back into the old pattern. Has anyone else dealt with a group that says they want variety but votes the same way every time?
Why does every group I've ever been in do this? It's like when my friends say they want to try new restaurants but we end up at the same taqueria every Friday, or when my job says they want fresh ideas but shoot down anything that wasn't done before. People say they want something different but then they get scared when it actually shows up, because different means they might not like it and that feels risky. Your rule was smart though, making the host pick takes the group vote out of it and someone just has to own the choice.
