That annotated classic beat the audiobook for our group, hands down
Our club spent 6 months going back and forth on whether to do print, ebook, or audio for our monthly picks. Last month we tried the audiobook for The Grapes of Wrath and half the group showed up with totally different impressions of the characters. This month we switched to the annotated paperback edition with the historical footnotes and it was like a whole different book. The margin notes about the Dust Bowl context and the Okie migration really settled our usual arguments about character motivations. We spent 45 minutes just talking about the preface alone, which never happens with audio. Has anyone else found that the extra context in a printed edition changes the debate more than the narration style does?

The footnotes basically hand you the context, so debates get deeper way faster.
