Rant: half our book club quit over a 40 page romance pick and I got blamed for it
Last Tuesday at Linda's place in Sacramento, six of our ten members walked out mid meeting because the vote went to a romance novel instead of the WWII history book. I was the one who tallied the votes, so now three people are texting me saying I rigged it, which is nuts since we just do a show of hands. We have been reading together for two years and never had a split like this over one pick. How do you all handle it when a book choice actually breaks the group apart?
We had this happen after a tough nonfiction pick about three years back. What saved us was making the next month a free read where everyone brings whatever they want and shares one thing about it. It let people cool off and remember why we show up. We also switched to picking books two months ahead so nobody gets surprised. The texting about rigging is rough but it usually dies down once people see the group is still standing. Maybe reach out to the ones who left and ask if they want to come back for a lighter pick, no hard feelings.
