My book club made me pick between finishing a 700 page novel or faking it, and I chose wrong
So our club picked this 700 page doorstop for January and I got exactly 9 days to read it before meeting at Dana's place in Portland. I did the math and picked faking it with the SparkNotes summary over pulling three all nighters, figuring nobody would ask anything deep. Ten minutes into the discussion, Carol asked me what I thought about the sister's letter on page 512, and I just said 'it hit hard' twice in a row. Now I'm the person who got caught, and Dana keeps calling me 'cliff notes' every single meeting. Do you all actually finish the whole book, or is there a secret handshake for the fakers?
Own the fake, man. That whole club probably has half its members skimming or reading recaps and nobody says a word until someone gets caught, so don't sweat it. Just admit you skimmed, ask Carol what she got from that letter, and let Dana's little nickname die out on its own.
