Heard a woman at the Boston meetup say audiobooks 'don't count' and I think that gatekeeping hurts clubs
Honestly, at our March meetup in Boston, a member named Dana argued that listening to a memoir on 1.5x speed is cheating compared to sitting with the pages. Tbh that view ignores how many people in our group have long drives or vision issues, and acting like one format is the real way to engage just pushes folks out. Ngl, the best talk we had all year was about a book half of us heard and half of us read. Does your club count audiobooks, or do you draw a line somewhere?
Wait, 1.5x speed? That's the part that got me. I can maybe see someone saying a normal speed listen is different from reading, even if I don't agree, but calling it cheating because she sped it up? Does the speed change the words? Last time I checked the story is the same at 1x or 1.5x. My buddy does chores and walks his dog while listening and he remembers way more than I do from a paper book. The whole thing just sounds like someone decided their way is the only way.
