Weld tested my new wire feed on a grain bin patch, came out clean, then noticed the crack ran further than I thought
Last month in Garden City I ran a 6010 root on a 3/16 bin wall, switched to a wire feed for the cap, and the puddle looked perfect until I knocked the slag and saw the fissure was 14 inches past my prep. My lead guy said to burn it out and redo it, but I already sealed the side I thought was the problem. How do you all inspect for hidden cracks before you commit to a repair pass on old galvanized steel?
Sounds like you sealed the crack a little brother, told mom you cleaned the room, then found the mess under the bed. Galvanized loves hiding stuff like that, so a wire wheel and dye pen before you even strike an arc saves the headache. Burn it out like your lead said, chasing 14 inches of surprise is cheaper than doing the whole patch twice.
