Was he wearing his collar when he took off, or did he slip out of it? My neighbor's lab learned how to back out of his buckle collar, the little escape artist. That panic when you first realize they're gone is the worst, your stomach just drops. What was going through your head while you were searching?

Remembered my buddy's husky who figured out how to undo the plastic clip on his own collar. He'd push it against the fence post until it popped open. My friend spent forty minutes in a total cold sweat, checking the busy road, imagining the worst. He finally found the dog two streets over, happily rolling in something awful in a stranger's yard, the collar just lying there in the driveway.

Had a similar moment yesterday when my dog got out but came back on his own. I was searching the neighborhood for an hour, calling his name. He just trotted up to the porch like nothing happened. Almost cried from relief.
