My game group fell apart over a rules dispute in a Gloomhaven scenario

We were three hours into a complex fight in my friend's basement when two players argued about a monster movement rule, with one saying the other was 'cheating the spirit of the game'. I tried to look it up online, but the debate got so heated the session ended early. How do you handle a major rules disagreement without ruining the night?

Oof, that "cheating the spirit of the game" line is rough, I've been there. @milesk27 has the right idea to just pick a rule and keep playing, because a stalled game is worse than a wrong rule. It sucks when a good night gets wrecked over something you can google later.

Pick a temporary rule and stick with it for the rest of the session. You can look up the exact answer later, but stopping the game to argue kills the fun for everyone. The goal is to keep playing, not to win a debate.

Ever have that one friend who just can't let a rule slide? We started calling a "game master's call" for any dispute, like a quick vote to just make a call and move on. It saved so many nights from turning into a law seminar. @milesk27 is totally right, the fun dies when everyone's just staring at a rulebook. We'd jot down the question on a phone note to check later, but keeping the game rolling was always the better call, even if we got it wrong.
