That random stranger's comment about my dog changed my whole walk routine

Last Tuesday at the park, a guy said my rescue mutt looks happier when I let her sniff for five extra minutes. Now I schedule 10 extra minutes each morning and she's way calmer the rest of the day. Has anyone else had a tiny tweak like that come from a random person?

Respectfully, it sounds like the random stranger just validated what you already knew your dog needed. Sometimes people overthink these small changes and end up making their whole life about the "advice" instead of just enjoying the walk.

A buddy of mine once got told by a random jogger that his dog was pulling too hard on the leash. He spent the next two weeks hyperfixating on heel training, bought a special harness, watched like ten YouTube videos. The dog ended up more stressed than before because he was so tense about it. Eventually he just stopped worrying and went back to letting the dog sniff around, and the pulling got better on its own. @quinncarr might be onto something about not making the whole walk about the advice. Sometimes the small tweak works best when you don't turn it into a whole project.

Hold on though, I gotta push back on that. That extra five minutes isn't just some random tweak, it's basically retraining your whole dog's nervous system. Letting them sniff releases dopamine and lowers cortisol, so yeah, a stranger noticing that change is like having a free dog trainer spot a gap in your routine. I bet the mutt was already giving you signs she needed more sniff time, you just weren't reading them yet. Better to lean into the advice and make it a non-negotiable part of your walk than to shrug it off as just a nice idea. Could be that stranger saved you from weeks of a restless dog.
