Serious question, do you still use a traditional coal forge or have you switched to a propane one?

I used my coal setup for 15 years, but after moving to a place with strict air quality rules in Portland, I switched to a propane Majestic forge last year. Is the control and cleanliness worth losing that classic heat and feel?

See, that's the thing people get wrong about propane forges. You don't lose the heat, you just lose the soot. My Majestic gets just as hot for general forging, and I can actually see the color of the metal better without all that smoke. The control is the real game changer, though. You ever try to hold a perfect welding heat in a coal fire when the wind shifts? Not a problem now.

Right, because wrestling a coal fire in a breeze is such a fun time. Nothing like a sudden gust turning your perfect weld into a sparkly, ruined mess. Propane just sits there and does what you tell it, like a well-trained dog. My old coal set-up was more like trying to herd cats.

Ugh, preach. The control is everything. I burned so much stuff trying to learn on coal.
