Rant: Why does every big group project turn into 3 people doing all the work?

I just finished a 6 month community garden project with 12 people on the roster and by the end it was me, this retired guy named Dave, and one college kid doing all the digging and planting. The other 9 just showed up to the planning meetings and nodded along but never actually lifted a shovel or a bag of soil. Has anyone else noticed that the loudest talkers in group efforts are always the first to disappear when real work needs doing?

Nah, sometimes the talkers are keeping the bored people from wandering off.

Keeping bored people from wandering off" is literally how my buddy Greg describes his job as a security guard at a museum, but I've never seen anyone treat a group project like that.

Exactly this. The talkers just show up for the credit, not the labor.
