Why does everyone love The Wire? I tapped out after 8 episodes

I tried watching The Wire last month because everyone says it's the greatest show ever. I made it through 8 episodes and it just felt slow and hard to follow. Did I miss something or is it just not for me?

Ugh, I feel your pain. I had the exact same experience. People kept telling me to push through, that it gets better, but after eight episodes you've given it a fair shot. It's not that it's bad, but the pacing is brutally slow and there are like forty characters you're expected to keep track of. I think some shows just click or they don't, and that's okay. You shouldn't have to force yourself through something that feels like homework.

Man, that's exactly how I felt. Gave it nine episodes before I tapped out. Everyone talks about it like it's some masterpiece but I was just bored out of my mind trying to remember who was who.
