Watched a buddy's old Bianchi go from creaky mess to buttery smooth after a full BB overhaul
My friend brought over his '91 Bianchi last weekend complaining about this weird click every pedal stroke. I pulled the bottom bracket and the cups were crusty with old grease and the bearings were pitted bad. After cleaning it up, new bearings, and proper preload it rode like a different bike completely. Anyone else amazed at how much a neglected bottom bracket can mess with the whole feel of a ride?

Oh man, that moment when a bike suddenly feels like it's gliding instead of grinding is so satisfying! It's wild how a gunked up bottom bracket can actually make the whole frame feel dead and flexy, not just the drivetrain. Nobody really talks about how that cruddy drag throws off your weight distribution and handling, turning a sweet ride into a slog.

Have you checked to see if the cups themselves were worn out of shape? I ran into that on an old Trek of mine, the drive side cup was actually starting to oval slightly from years of riding with loose bearings.
A fresh set of bearings and a good cleaning will absolutely wake a bike up, but if the cup surfaces are pitted or egg-shaped you're just polishing a turd. I learned that the hard way after three rides when the click came back.
You mentioned proper preload and that is the part most people skip. They just crank everything tight and wonder why it binds up. A little bit of play then back off a hair is the sweet spot, and a good quality grease makes all the difference.
