Repacked a hub at a shop in Boise that changed my grease game

I was helping out at a friend's shop in Boise last month and the old timer there showed me how he packs bearings by hand instead of using a tool. He did a tandem bearing setup on a Campy hub and I swear it took him 2 minutes flat with no mess. Has anyone else ditched the grease gun for just using their palms?

I mean, the old timers always have their tricks right? Ive been using a bearing packer for years and never really thought about doing it by hand on a tandem setup. Did he just smear grease on his palms and press the bearings in or was he doing something specific with the cage? Im curious if theres a knack to it that makes it actually faster than a tool, or if its more about just feeling the bearings seat right.
