I finally understood why my shop's Park Tool T-handle hex wrenches kept walking off

I was listening to a podcast interview with a shop owner from Seattle who said they started using a magnetic tool strip just for those specific wrenches. We tried it last month, and it cut our replacement costs by about $60. What's your best method for keeping small, high-use tools from disappearing?

It's the same reason my good pens vanish at work. Things that fit in a pocket and don't look like they belong somewhere specific just get borrowed forever. The magnetic strip or the ugly paint job gives the tool a clear home base. Without that, it becomes community property by accident. We need a visual cue to remind people it's not a free agent.

Our shop just paints all the handles bright orange. Looks ridiculous, but you can spot them across the room. The ugly factor keeps them from wandering.

My old boss at the auto shop made us dip the ends of every wrench in neon green tool coating. It was so ugly nobody wanted to be seen walking off with one, and we could always find them under a car. That visual cue really does stop the borrowing before it starts. It turns a generic tool into something that obviously belongs to a specific spot. Have you found the orange paint stops people from even picking them up in the first place?

Ever try painting just the tips instead?
