I was totally against therapy talk until my buddy called me out at a diner in Cleveland

Last Tuesday my friend Dave looked at me over coffee and said 'dude you look like you're holding a beach ball underwater.' I laughed it off but then I sat in my car for 15 minutes after. Something about the way he said it hit different. I've been telling everyone I'm fine for like 3 years straight. Has anyone else had a friend just see through the whole act like that?

That thing about sitting in your car for 15 minutes really got me. I did the exact same thing after my brother told me I looked like I was "running on fumes" at a family barbecue. I mean, I sat there in the driveway just staring at my garage door and it hit me that I hadn't actually talked to anyone about how I was doing in years. What worked for me was just texting my brother the next day and saying "hey, that thing you said really stuck with me, can we grab a beer and talk about it?" Idk, something about just admitting he was right made it easier to actually open up a little. We ended up talking for like two hours and it was the first time I felt like I wasn't carrying everything alone. It wasn't some big fix or anything, but it got the ball rolling.

Aw man, I gotta disagree here. That whole "just open up to someone" thing isn't for everyone. I tried something similar with my dad after a rough patch. Texted him, we met up, and I spilled my guts for an hour. Next thing I know, he's telling all my aunts and uncles about it at Christmas dinner. Now I can't show up without someone asking if I'm "doing okay." Sometimes keeping stuff to yourself keeps it from becoming everyone's business. Not every problem needs a beer talk.
