A guy at my gym in Austin said 'nobody actually wants to hear the truth at the front desk' and it hit me
I work the morning shift at a gym in Austin and we're trained to greet everyone like they're having the best day. Last Tuesday this member named Ray stopped mid-check-in and said that line about the front desk, and I laughed, but he wasn't joking. I asked what he meant and he said he's been coming 4 days a week for a year because it's the one place nobody expects him to be happy. Now I catch myself doing the same fake smile thing with members when I'm running on 4 hours of sleep. Does anyone else have a job where the happy act is basically part of the uniform? How do you keep it up without losing it?
