My dad told me I was overcomplicating garage organization and he was right

I spent like 3 weekends building custom shelving with all these fancy brackets and labeled bins. My dad came over to borrow my socket set and just looked at it. He said 'son you got 4 pegboards full of tools you never use and the stuff you actually need is buried in a tote on the floor.' I got kinda annoyed at first but then he pointed out that I had 3 different caulk guns but couldn't find my hammer. So last Tuesday I ripped half of it down and just hung my most used tools on simple hooks by the workbench. The rest went into clear tubs with big sharpie labels on the side. Now I can grab my level or my tape measure without playing hide and seek. Has anyone else realized they were just decorating their garage instead of making it actually work for them?

It always makes me chuckle how people treat garages like they're museum exhibits instead of work spaces. You learned a practical lesson about function over form that a lot of folks never figure out. Glad you got it sorted with just some hooks and clear tubs.

That "showroom instead of a garage" line really hit home, I've been guilty of that myself. Clear bins and some wall hooks just make life so much easier.

Right on, @blair_taylor32 nailed it. You built a showroom instead of a garage, sounds like half the guys on YouTube who never actually turn a wrench. My favorite part is the three caulk guns but no hammer, that's like having a fancy kitchen with no frying pan. Clear tubs and sharpie labels are the real MVP here, the "before" picture is just decoration for the gram. Some people really do treat their tool storage like a model train layout instead of a place to get stuff done. Good on you for seeing the light before you built a whole damn library of tools you'd never touch.
