Took me 6 months to figure out my smoker was leaking bad

I kept getting temps all over the place on my offset smoker and blamed the fire management every time. After trying different wood splits and damper settings for like 6 months straight, I finally noticed a gap in the door seal. I used a dollar bill to check all the edges and found the leak right away. Fixed it with some high temp gasket tape and now my temps hold steady within 10 degrees. Anyone else chase a problem forever only to find something stupid simple like this?

Respectfully, that leak might not be the only issue. Draft and airflow matter way more than people realize, and a tight seal can actually choke a fire if the stack height and inlet size aren't matched right. I'd check your firebox airflow next, that gap might have been helping more than hurting.

Doesn't it seem like we're always chasing the "perfect" setup in everythin', not just woodstoves? I've been noticing it everywhere-people tweaking their car engines 'til they run worse, sealin' up their houses so tight they need air exchangers, even over-tightenin' bolts 'til they snap. There's this sweet spot where things work best, but we keep thinkin' more is better. Your gap was probably givin' it that little bit of a crack it needed to breathe, same way a loose fit in a doorframe lets an old house settle without warping.
