Used a new texturizing shear on a client's thick hair and it went totally flat

I picked up the 'Razor Edge' shears last week to try on a guy with super dense, straight hair. I did my usual thinning technique but after the blow dry, his hair looked limp and lost all volume. My mentor told me I probably took out too much weight from the mid-lengths instead of just the ends. Has anyone else had this happen and know a better method for thick hair with these shears?

What's your point of entry with the shears? I had the same issue until I started only texturizing the very ends on dense hair. Taking weight from the middle just kills the lift. Now I barely open the blades and just skim the last half inch.

Yeah, that's a classic mistake with really dense hair. You have to be so careful not to over-texturize the support areas. What's your go-to technique now to avoid that?

Actually think a little over-texturizing can help dense hair move better. I just go in with my shears and take out some extra weight from the middle sections. It stops the hair from sitting so heavy and gives a softer shape.
