The fading spray that took me 3 months to finally get right

I kept noticing my clients' color washed out within two weeks, even using the same dye I'd used for years. I switched to three different brands, adjusted processing times, even changed my shampoo supplier in February. It turned out my spray bottle nozzle was delivering uneven amounts of developer, and I only caught it when a client asked why one side of her head looked lighter. Anyone else ever traced a stubborn problem back to a tool you use every day and never thought to question?

The part about the spray nozzle delivering uneven developer is interesting, but I think you might be giving the nozzle too much credit. Spray bottles usually just atomize whatever is in them. If the nozzle was clogged or worn, it would mostly affect how the product lands on the hair, not the actual mix ratio. The uneven lighter side could also be from how you were holding the bottle or the distance you sprayed from. I've had a similar thing happen with a bad batch of developer that expired on the shelf, and that caused more patchiness than any nozzle issue. Might be worth checking the dye's expiration date or the water hardness in your shampoo next time.
