Vent: My local credit union in Portland just killed their free checking

Last week I got a letter saying my free checking account now needs a $500 minimum balance or a $10 monthly fee. Three years ago I switched from a big bank to them specifically for no fees (and better local service, honestly). Now I'm looking at moving my direct deposit again, which is a huge pain. Has anyone else's small bank pulled this recently?

Guess the "local" part didn't include local loyalty.

Ever notice how loyalty only goes one way with these places? I started checking prices at the discount store across town and it's way lower for basics. Now I just buy the fancy stuff local and get eggs somewhere else. You gotta split your list to make it work.

My grocery store's "everyday low price" on eggs went up twice last month. I mean, it feels like everything good gets taken back slowly until it's just normal and bad. Maybe it's just me but that's the real pattern now.
