My card got declined at breakfast yesterday and I learned something about my bank account

I was at a diner in Cleveland around 7 AM trying to pay for a $12 omelet and my debit card just got rejected. No idea why, I had money in there. Turns out my bank's fraud detection flagged it because I never eat out that early, I usually swipe at 8 PM for groceries. Had to call them from the restaurant phone to get it fixed, which took like 20 minutes. Has anyone else had their bank flag a normal transaction just because of the time of day?

Wait, they flagged you for going to breakfast at SEVEN IN THE MORNING? That is ABSURD. Like what, the bank thinks you got kidnapped by omelet cartel at dawn? I once had them deny a gas station purchase in Nebraska at 3 PM because I "usually buy gas in Texas" and I was just driving through. They literally locked my whole card over a road trip. I had to sit in a dusty parking lot for 45 minutes talking to a robot just to get my tank filled. It's like banks think we're all supposed to eat dinner at exactly 6 PM and never leave our zip codes.

Hate when they treat normal life like some kinda crime scene.

Best thing I ever did was call my bank and ask them to put a travel note on my account whenever I plan to be more than 50 miles from home. Just a quick phone call or a note in the app can save you that dusty parking lot hassle. It's a little extra step but beats getting locked out of your own money.
