Just hit 50 automatic payments on my checking account and it kind of freaked me out
I was scrolling through my bank app last night and counted 50 recurring charges pulling from my account each month, from $3.99 for a streaming thing I forgot about to my car note. That's over $1,100 leaving before I even wake up on the 1st, and I had no idea it added up like that until I actually counted. Has anyone else gone through and killed a bunch of these, and did you use an app or just do it by hand?
One thing nobody talks about is how these small charges mess with your actual spending power in a sneaky way. Banks look at your average daily balance when deciding stuff like overdraft fees or whether to waive a monthly fee, so having $40 trickle out on random days can drop you below a threshold you didn't even know you were riding. Same with credit card points or cash back tiers if your bills are split across cards. Killing the $3.99 stuff doesn't just save $48 a year, it cleans up the timing of when money leaves so your balance looks steadier. Do it by hand though, apps that "find subscriptions" usually just scan and then want a cut or your login.
