Pro tip: I wasted $40 on a 'no fail' cake decorating kit that was anything but

Bought one of those kits with all the fancy tips and a promise of pro results. The plastic was cheap and the coupler broke on my second batch of frosting, ruining a whole cake I'd spent 3 hours on. The instructions were useless, just pictures with no real steps. Ended up having to run to the store and buy a single good tip for $8 to finish the job. Has anyone found a decent starter set that won't fall apart?

I used to think those kits were a smart way to start, but the "promise of pro results" line got me too. I mean, you figure it has everything, so it must be easier. My coupler didn't break, but the tips were so thin the frosting just oozed out the sides. It made a huge mess and the shapes never held. I had to just give up and buy a couple of the basic metal tips by themselves. It's a bummer because it seems like such a good idea, but they're just not made to actually work.
