A customer told me my chocolate chip cookies were too sweet and it made me rethink my whole recipe
I've been using the same Toll House recipe for years, no changes. Last month, a regular at the farmers market said, 'These are good, but the sugar just punches you in the face.' That stuck with me. I started cutting the white sugar by a quarter cup and adding a half teaspoon more salt. It sounds small, but it made a huge difference. The chocolate flavor comes through way more now, and the cookie itself has a better, less one-note taste. I was so used to my old way I never questioned it. Has anyone else gotten a piece of feedback that made you tweak a classic recipe you thought was perfect?

My buddy who runs a small bakery had a similar wake up call with his banana bread. Someone told him it was a bit dry and he was kind of offended at first, it was his grandma's recipe. He ended up trying a mashed banana instead of just sliced and adding an extra egg yolk. Tbh he said it totally changed the game, made it way more moist and rich. Sometimes you just need that outside opinion to see what you're missing.

Oh man, @janah83, that's so true. I had the exact same thing happen with my chili recipe. My sister said it needed more depth and I was ready to fight her. Threw in a little cocoa powder and some coffee like she said, and holy crap, she was right. It's wild how you can get so stuck on your own way that you miss an obvious fix. Your buddy's story is spot on.

My old boss at the diner would get mad if you changed his soup recipe. After a new cook added some vinegar to the pot, he had to admit it was better. It's like we build a wall around our own ideas and can't see over it.
