The day I tried to save money by fixing my own sink and flooded my kitchen
Last Tuesday I watched a 4 minute YouTube video about replacing a faucet gasket and thought 'I got this'. I shut off the main valve, pulled the old gasket, and the pipe behind the wall just snapped clean off. Water sprayed everywhere for a solid 2 minutes before I found the shutoff outside. Cost me $300 for an emergency plumber and I still had to mop for an hour. Has anyone else had a simple DIY project turn into a disaster that fast?

My brother in law did the exact same thing to a copper pipe under his kitchen sink, and it took three trips to the hardware store and a full weekend to fix it right. Sometimes the 4 minute video leaves out the part where your pipes are held together with hope and rust.

That's the real problem with all those DIY videos - they never show the part where you find out your pipes are basically held together by 50 years of mineral deposits and sheer luck. My buddy spent two days on a "simple" toilet flange replacement that the video claimed would take 45 minutes.
