PSA: my new fence post hole flooded after the storm and I fixed it with a $12 bag of gravel
Last Saturday I was digging post holes for a new 6 foot privacy fence in my backyard when a storm rolled through and filled two of them with muddy water. I tried bailing them out with a bucket, but they just kept filling back up because the soil here in Portland is mostly clay. I ran to the hardware store and grabbed a $12 bag of drainage gravel, dumped about 4 inches in each hole, and set the posts on top of that. It worked fine, but now I'm wondering if I should've done all 14 holes this way from the start. Has anyone else dealt with soggy post holes, and did gravel actually keep your posts from rotting out later?
