One comment about my pergola posts made me ditch the concrete idea

Someone on here said my 6x6 posts looked like they were just sitting in dirt, and they were right, so I dug down 3 feet and set them in gravel with anchors instead of concrete. Took me a whole weekend but now I can actually use the swing without feeling the whole frame shift, has anyone else skipped concrete for their post bases and regretted it or not?

Damn, three feet down? That's like a whole human buried under that thing. I mean, I'm sitting here picturing you with a post hole digger and a theodolite or whatever, and honestly that's some dedication. I skipped concrete once on a fence and used just gravel and anchors, but the posts were only like 2 feet deep and I swear they wiggled every winter freeze. Maybe it's the extra foot that makes the difference, but I'd be nervous to hang a swing off it, even after a weekend of that back-breaking work.
