Built a pergola 8 years ago and just noticed the posts are sitting directly in concrete which is gonna rot them out eventually
Saw a post on r/decks last week where someone's post rotted clean through after 10 years and ran outside to check mine only to find the same exact setup, now I'm trying to figure out if there's a way to fix it without tearing the whole thing down has anyone dealt with this?.

Jacked mine up with a bottle jack and used a sawzall to cut the posts above the concrete line. Slid some galvanized post bases under there before lowering it back down, sealed the cut ends with wood preservative first. That was 3 years ago and still solid, saved me from rebuilding the whole thing.

Just noticed the same thing on my own pergola last month. Seems like nobody warned us about this back when we were building these things, guess that's the way it goes with a lot of home projects you figure out the hard way years later.

Is it just me or is that how pretty much everything works in life now? You find out the real stuff way after you've already committed. I built a little shed in my backyard a couple years back, same kind of deal. Nobody mentioned the drainage issues until after I had the whole thing up and the floor started getting soggy. It's like this weird universal rule where the actual useful knowledge only comes from going through it yourself, not from instructions or even forums like this half the time. You read all these guides, watch videos, think you're set, and then bam, there's some hidden gotcha that shows up three seasons later. Makes you wonder if people just don't talk about the boring maintenance stuff because it's not as exciting as showing off a new build. Anyway, hope your pergola ends up okay, water damage is a real pain to deal with once it sets in.
