The soil test I skipped cost me 300 bucks in dead plants

Last spring I went all in on a backyard flower bed and just threw in some bags of topsoil from the big box store without testing what was underneath. Three weeks later everything was yellow and drooping, turns out my clay is so alkaline it's basically baking soda. A friend who does landscaping finally made me get a proper soil test from the local extension office, only 25 bucks, and it showed a bunch of other issues too like low nitrogen and compaction. I spent another 280 on compost and gypsum to fix it and the second round of plants are thriving now. I honestly wish I'd just done the test first instead of guessing, it would've saved me the whole season. Has anyone else had soil totally wreck a renovation plan and what did you do to bounce back?

That $25 test woulda saved you like 275 bucks in the long run. Soil is sneaky like that, what you see on top means nothing. Ive watched people dump tons of money into beds that just turn yellow because the ground underneath is trash. Compost and gypsum fix a lot but only if you know what the actual problem is. Honestly the extension office tests are the best kept secret for gardeners. One bag of bad soil can wreck your whole vibe for the season.
