Finally got grass to grow in that shady corner after 3 tries
I have this spot next to my fence in Cincinnati where the sun barely hits. Tried regular seed twice and it just went yellow and died. Third time I used a fine fescue mix and actually watered it at night instead of morning. Been 6 weeks now and it is actually filling in. Has anyone else had luck with a specific shade mix?

Did you try adding some compost to the soil first?

That line about trying regular seed twice and it going yellow hit home for me. I fought the same losing battle in my backyard for two years before I gave up on the cheap seed. Fine fescue was the answer here too, and I started watering in the evening like you did. It makes such a difference when the sun isn't baking the water off before the roots can soak it in. I'm glad yours is filling in now. That feeling of finally seeing green where there was nothing makes all the failed attempts worth it.

Spent three summers dumping money into a patch of dirt that refused to cooperate, jana_shah, so I know exactly what that feeling is. Finally switched to a mix of creeping red fescue and chewings fescue and it took off like a weed, ironic since weeds were the only thing that grew before. My neighbor thought I was nuts watering at dusk but he's the one who asked me what I did differently last fall when his lawn started browning out in August. The satisfaction of watching that thin little patch turn into something you can actually walk on without cringing is real. Just wish someone had told me five years ago to stop being stubborn and buy the good seed from the start.
