Appreciation post: My buddy's 'river crossing' shortcut saved us 4 miles on the Lost Coast Trail last fall.

We were facing a huge detour around a landslide, but he remembered a low-tide rock hop from a trip five years prior that still worked perfectly, so do you think using old local knowledge like that is a smart risk or just asking for trouble?

Remember my uncle's "shortcut" that landed us in a farmer's field?

That "old local knowledge" is like finding a shortcut in life that the map doesn't show.

Man, that hits home. My grandpa knew which backroads avoided all the traffic lights, saving us ten minutes every trip. Those little unspoken tips feel like a secret handshake with a place.

Read an article once about how those old tricks can be the only way through after big storms.
