Serious question, did I mess up torquing the lugs on a 2011 Civic after the rotor job?
Last Friday I swapped the front rotors and pads on a customer's Civic in my home shop in Toledo, and when I went to torque the lugs I snapped one stud clean off at around 90 ft-lbs. I checked the spec twice, it said 80, so I'm wondering if my old click wrench is way out of calibration or if that stud was already stressed. What's your go-to way to check if a torque wrench is still good without sending it out?
Those studs on older Civics get weak over time, especially if somebody hammered them on with an impact gun before you ever touched the car. A click wrench can be off but 10 ft-lbs off at 80 isn't usually enough to snap a healthy stud, so my money is on that stud already being stretched or rusted thin. As for checking the wrench without sending it out, hang a known weight off the handle at a set distance and do the math, like 50 pounds at two feet should click right around 100 ft-lbs. You can also clamp the square drive in a vise and hang weights off the handle to see where it actually breaks over. If it clicks way late, it's junk, and honestly a cheap beam style wrench makes a good sanity check against your clicker.
