Had a talk with a diesel tech at a shop in Lubbock that changed how I look at air filters

He said he sees more engines fail from over-tightened air filter housings than from dirty filters. Said people crank em down and crack the plastic, letting grit in. Anybody else been guilty of this?

Yeah, the over-tightened housing cracking thing got me. I definitely used to crank mine down until I heard that same warning from a mechanic.

That mechanic literally saved me from myself lmao. Thought I was being thorough by cranking everything down till it wouldn't budge, turns out I was just one turn away from disaster. Had a buddy whose housing cracked clean in half after he went full hulk mode on it, said it sounded like a gunshot when it let go. Now I'm the weirdo who finger tightens everything and whispers sweet nothings to my components. My torque wrench gets more use than my actual tools at this point.

Notice how this exact same thing happens everywhere in life, not just with tools. People think more force equals better results but it's usually the opposite. Like when I see someone mashing buttons on a keyboard or yanking a stuck zipper, I can just feel the disaster coming. There's something about learning to trust the gentle touch that takes time to figure out, but once you do it changes how you approach pretty much everything. Being patient and precise just works better than brute forcing your way through stuff.
