Pro tip: a painter in my shop told me my mud work was 'too clean' and it bugged me for a month
I used to sand every filler edge down to a feather before I'd even touch a block, thought that was the mark of good work. Back in March a guy named Ray who's been spraying for 22 years walked past my bay in the Garland shop and said I was wasting my own time because I was sanding away the crown I needed. I argued with him for a bit but he grabbed a guide coat and showed me where I was cutting past the repair on a quarter panel. Now I stop at 180 on the edge and let the primer do the rest, and my comebacks on shrinkage have dropped way down. Anybody else get their process flipped by a random comment from an old timer?
So the old guy who sprays all day tells you your sanding is too good and that's the day your comebacks drop? That's some kind of messed up karma right there. Guess Ray owes you 22 years of feather edges back.
