My old boss at the shop in Reno swore by 80 grit on plastic bumpers, and I finally tried it last month
He used to tell me 80 grit on a DA was the only way to get filler to bite on those flexible bumper covers, and I always thought he was nuts because it seemed way too rough. Tried it on a beat up Camry rear cover last month and the filler stuck perfect with zero lifting after 3 weeks in the sun. So now I'm wondering if the grit chart I learned in trade school was just plain wrong about plastics, what grit are you all running on raw bumper plastic?
Wait, 80 grit on a DA? That sounds like you're just carving grooves into the plastic, not prepping it. I was always taught 180 minimum on bumpers and even that felt aggressive to some guys I know. But you're saying it held up for 3 weeks in the sun with no lifting? That blows my mind a little. Maybe the flexible covers are different because they grab filler better when the surface is really chewed up. Did you notice any scratch marks showing through the filler after it cured, or did the primer hide all that? Kind of makes me want to test it on a scrap cover before I trust it on a customer car.
