I finally understood why my clear coat kept getting orange peel after watching a guy in Phoenix spray a panel with his gun 18 inches away.

Eighteen inches away? That's crazy far for clear coat. No wonder it was coming out rough. You gotta get way closer than that.

Yeah, that distance is a recipe for dry spray and texture. In my experience, you want to be more like six to eight inches away, moving slow and steady. The paint needs to land wet enough to flow out, and from a foot and a half, it's drying in the air before it even hits the panel.
