Guy at the parts counter in Fresno said my primer habit was backwards, and I think he might be right
I was picking up a gallon of 2K primer at the jobber on Blackstone Ave and the counter guy, who has been mixing paint since 1988, asked why I always seal bare metal before body filler. He said he has seen way more filler pop off sealed panels than properly prepped bare steel, which goes against everything I was taught. Now I am second guessing my whole process on this 2015 F-150 bed side, so what do you all do on bare metal, seal it first or filler first?
Well shoot, so the guy who's been mixing paint since before I could drive is telling you your whole system is backwards and now you're standing in the garage staring at a bedside like it owes you money. Body filler is basically glue, and glue sticks to rough bare steel way better than it sticks to a slick epoxy coat, that part makes sense. But every old school guy I know swears by sealing first to keep rust from creeping under the filler. So either half the shops in America have been doing it wrong for 30 years, or the paint counter philosopher is just bored and messing with you.
