Found out my laser measuring tool was off by 3/8 inch, now I'm second guessing everything

So I was checking some panel gaps on a 2018 Civic and my digital caliper read one thing, but the laser measure said another. Turns out the laser had drifted from being dropped one too many times, and I never verified it against a known standard. This makes me wonder, how many of us are trusting tools we've never calibrated, and is it worth paying $80 to have them checked yearly or should we just do the old tape measure cross-check every morning? Has anyone else had a tool silently lie to them and it cost them a repaint or a re-fit?
