Drove 90 minutes to a dark site near Ely with a dead camera battery and a spare that was also dead
Got the scope set up, aligned Polaris dead on, and then the shutter button did nothing. Both batteries read full at home on the charger but drained to zero in the cold, it was 19 degrees out there. Now I keep them in an inside pocket wrapped in a sock, anyone got a better cold weather trick?
A buddy of mine had the same thing happen with his DSLR in the cold, both batteries showed full on the charger at home then died in like 20 minutes out at the site. What he ended up doing was keeping one in his jacket pocket right against his chest and swapping it in only when he was ready to shoot, then the cold one went back in the pocket to warm up. He also started carrying those cheap hand warmer packets in the same pocket with the spare, said it helped a lot. The sock thing works fine but your body heat plus a hand warmer is the real trick.
