So I was sure those 'ask me anything' posts were just for celebrities, but my friend did one for his small business and got 12 new clients in a week.

Stop thinking about it and just do one. The trick is to actually answer the questions with real, useful info, not just a sales pitch. People can smell a fake from a mile away. Pick a time when you know your customers are online, promote it for a couple days first, and then show up ready to talk. You don't need a huge following, you just need to give people a clear reason to trust you.

My cousin did that selling handmade soap... worked weirdly well.

Totally agree about the "real, useful info" part. I tried a live Q&A for my plant cuttings last spring and just answered every single care question honestly, even the dumb ones. Ended up selling way more than I expected because people kept asking for the exact plants I was talking about.
