I hung one shelf in my garage and it took me 9 hours because of a stud I never found
So I finally got around to putting up a shelf in my garage on a Saturday morning, just a simple 4 foot board with two brackets, and I figured it would be a 45 minute job tops. Well, I drilled the first hole and hit nothing but air, no stud, just drywall, so I moved over 2 inches and tried again, still nothing. I spent the next hour basically playing whack a mole with my stud finder, which kept beeping at random spots and then going quiet, and I even tried the old knock on the wall trick like my dad taught me. Around noon I gave up on that wall, drove to the hardware store for a magnet stud finder, and came back to find the stud was there the whole time, just 16 inches in from where I started, my cheap finder was just garbage. Total time from first drill hole to the last screw was 9 hours, and honestly 3 of those hours were just me being mad at the wall. My neighbor watched the whole thing from his driveway and said 'you know they make anchors for that, right?' Has anyone else had a stud finder lie straight to their face like that?
Oh come on, you can't blame the stud finder for this one. Sixteen inches off is a lot, but you hit air twice and kept trusting a beeping plastic box instead of just poking around a bit more with a thin nail. Nine hours is on you, buddy, not the wall.
