Just bought a $120 soil probe for my dig site and it's been a total waste
I was working on a small site in Vermont and thought a proper soil probe would help me find features faster. The thing bent on the second day when it hit a rock, and now it's just sitting in my truck. Has anyone found a good tool for quick testing in rocky ground?

My old crew in Maine swore by a rock bar for quick pokes in tough ground. You ever try something like that?

Yeah, "the thing bent on the second day" is so real lol. I just use a solid steel rod now.

The thing bent on the second day" is the whole story with those probes. I had the same thing happen with a fancy one on a site in New Hampshire. It felt like hitting a brick wall and just folded. Now I just use a tile spade and a lot of patience in rocky areas. Those probes are only good for perfect, soft soil.
