I keep seeing people mix up Clovis and Folsom points on here like they're the same thing

It's been bugging me for weeks now. Clovis points are older, around 13,000 years ago, and they have that flute that goes maybe a third of the way up. Folsom points are way more delicate with flutes almost the whole length, and those are from about 10,800 years ago at sites like the Lindenmeier site in Colorado. How do you tell them apart without looking at the base shape or the flaking pattern?

Honestly, is it really that big of a deal? Most people just see a pointy rock with a notch in it and call it a day.

Makes me think of the time I confidently called a Folsom point a "fancy Clovis" to a guy who works at the museum. He just stared at me for a solid five seconds before walking away. So yeah, I get why it bugs you. The fluting difference is pretty obvious once you actually look at both side by side, but I still mix them up when I'm holding them in bad light.

Heard a podcast say Folsom points have flutes that go way farther up the blade.
