Found a 300 year old coin in my backyard on Tuesday, then broke my trowel on a buried sprinkler head an hour later
So I finally got permission to dig a small test pit behind my shed in Roanoke and pulled out a Spanish silver coin about the size of a nickel, dated 1721. I was running around like a kid showing my neighbor Gary, who just nodded and said his uncle found a whole jar of those back in the 70s. An hour later I hit a rusted sprinkler head, snapped my trowel in half, and spent the rest of the day filling the hole back in. Anybody else have a site give you a total high and a total low in the same afternoon?
Life has a way of handing you a win and a smack in the face on the same day, doesn't it. You find a 1721 coin and for one hour you're the luckiest guy in Virginia, then a sprinkler head puts you right back in your place. I've noticed this happens a lot with hobbies, the excitement is what keeps you going but the setbacks are what make the good finds feel earned. Gary's uncle finding a whole jar is the perfect example too, some people just get the jackpot and never even have to break a trowel for it. Sorry about the trowel but that coin is a heck of a story either way.
Ever try marking your sprinkler heads before you start swinging? I learned that one the hard way after a similar run in with my own yard. Now I walk the spot first and stick little flags where the heads pop up, then dig around them. Cheap fix, saves you a trowel and a trip to the hardware store. Also keep a spare trowel in the truck, because the good one always breaks on the good day. That 1721 is worth the busted handle though.
