Trick for cleaning burnt on oven crud without scrubbing

I spent 20 minutes scraping an oven door last week before trying a steam clean trick I saw on a forum. Just put a baking dish with water and a cup of vinegar inside, run it at 450 for 30 minutes, then wipe everything off. Has anyone else tried this with heavy buildup or does it only work on light messes?

Doesn't touch the rock-solid baked-on carbon in my experience.

That "rock solid baked on carbon" part REALLY got my attention because I read somewhere that the REAL issue is how the carbon gets super heated and basically fuses to the metal at a molecular level. So no amount of soaking or steaming is gonna pop it off unless you break that bond with something stronger. I saw a video where a guy used a pumice stone on those really tough, glassy carbon patches and he said it worked way better than any chemical cleaner he ever tried. Pretty wild that you ran it for half an hour and the stuff still held on, that carbon must be like armor at that point.

Wait, you ran it for 30 minutes with vinegar and it still didn't cut through anything? @kimr74, I'd have guessed the steam would soften that carbon layer after all that time.
