The moment I realized my apology to my brother was just me making excuses

After he missed my kid's birthday party for the third time last November in Detroit, I finally heard myself say 'it's fine, I know you're busy' and it hit me that I'd been using his excuses as an excuse to never actually fix our relationship, so has anyone else had that gut drop where you suddenly see your own pattern?

Boy, that gut-drop feeling is something else. It's funny how we often treat our own family worse than strangers, just because we've built up these old habits of letting things slide.
