PSA: A friend told me my apology letters were just excuses

I wrote a long letter to my sister about our fight, and a buddy read it and said, 'This isn't an apology, it's a list of reasons you're right.' I deleted the whole thing and started over, just saying 'I'm sorry I hurt you.' Has anyone else had someone call them out on a bad apology?

Tell me about it. I once spent an hour explaining the "context" of why I forgot my friend's birthday. My other friend just looked at me and said, "So, you're not sorry you forgot, you're sorry you got caught." Felt like getting hit with a brick.

That hour of explaining is the worst part. Did you ever actually make it up to the friend you forgot, or did the brick from @sean_cooper58's friend just end it?

Ouch, that's brutally honest of your friend. It's crazy how a simple truth can hit so much harder than a long excuse. We've all been there trying to talk our way out of a mistake.
